January’s Organizers Meeting Minutes

Next week we’ll tell the tribe about the shortening of dance time
and start 90 min on 1/29/11 if agreed at group level

We’ll each provide backup cd’s in case of last min DJ cancellation

We’re changing the price structure to $10-15 Sliding scale suggestion and we’ll make a prominent offer to pay what you can — we want you to dance.

Idea of adding a label to the posters around town–

Lea needs to pay down her approx. $400 investment in advertising
She’ll have a card to track this, at $20 per class as long as that’s working, and maybe tweak it on an off week.

We’ll meet once every 6-8weeks to ensure collective scheduling.
Next meeting 2/12 after dance, potluck at Ecstatic Dance location.

We decided no more outgoing money toward printing/advertising for now.

We decided to keep about $100 in the box for emergency back up whatever that means.

We discussed we make a goal of having 3 months rent available to us.

The DJ’s are responsible for making an event page on Facebook prior to their Sunday DJ.

Aimee proposed a raffel for an iPad or $500. We are still in discussion regarding this.

We are Moving

Well, I guess that is sort of a given since this is a dance community, however I am talking about our dance location. Our new home will be at 155 Brackett Street, in the West End of Portland ME. The studio is located on the third floor of the building and has been host to dance and yoga since the 70′s. There is plenty of parking in the lot and the entrance is located on the left side of the building. Bhakti In Motion is the name of the studio we will be using. Thanks Kara!!

Amiee will be our DJ for our first dance there on January 1, 2011. She has named the theme “New Beginnings.” Hope to see you there as we celebrate a new year and a new dance space.

It has been so beautiful to share in dance with everyone over the last few weeks at Awake. Thank you everyone for making this such a powerful offering.

At our last organizers meeting we decided to open a bank account to manage the monies from our collection. Awake is giving us a deal on rent through the summer so we can pay for promotional materials. Our beautiful die cut post cards went to print this week and we will begin flyering Portland in a few weeks. We will have extras at dance if you want to help us in spreading the word.

Today was wonderful and fun. We gathered together, danced, and tested out a few sound systems. Thanks to Sage and John for bringing their gear and tunes.

We got the landlords approval on our system and for our loud noise times, yay!!!

Deb brought to the table really wonderful discussions about how to create inclusivity. We explored our name choices and tired on several ideas. She and Sage talked about initiating contact with existing Ecstatic Dance practitioners/communities and explore ways that we can support each other.

Deirdre brought the question of kids in the dance to the gathering and we discussed different ways that might work given our space and our desire and need for adult dance time/space. The space at Awake allows for a separate area where kids could potentially dance and play. So maybe we will explore having childcare. We also liked the idea of hosting family dance times.

Initial contact has been made with several Ecstatic Dance communities and we are in the process of scheduling our next meeting.

Several of us have class ideas so stay tuned for details as this all evolves.

first gathering

Our first gathering of Ecstatic Dance ME happened at The Awake Collective’s new space at 509 Forest Ave in Portland Maine.
We made some initial decisions.

Sunday June 15 10a-12p will be our first dance
We will contact our leads for local an New England DJ’s
We will contact at least 10 Ecstatic Dance communities, especially ones in New England
We will start dancing together
We will contact others locally who might want to organize with us

We talked about and had question about how to create safety. We would love to hear from you about how you would like the space held. What information would be helpful to have on the site?

Would any of you like to have a intro dance environment or a beginners time? Thanks
